About AFANCSS

Our Association

The Association of Family, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences Students (AFANCSS) is the official departmental association for students in the Department of Family, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. Its motto is: “Trained to meet the basic needs of man.”

The association is student-led and aims to foster unity, academic excellence, and personal development among its members. It promotes practical knowledge, organizes programs that benefit the student body, and serves as a platform for leadership and service within the department and beyond.

Brief History of AFANCSS

The department started as Home Economics Unit,  in October, 1981; and by 2006, it was renamed as Department of Family Nutrition and Consumer Sciences.

The Association of Family, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences Students (AFANCSS) has been in existence for the past 44 years now and it refers to a structured evolutionary  association, including reviewed governance frameworks, elected offices, and statutory bodies. Its existence is rooted in:

  • Promoting growth and academic excellence in Family, Nutrition, and Consumer Sciences.
  • Fostering unity among members and building collaboration with related departments and associations in other institutions.
  • Serving the individual and collective well-being of the members and the society at large.

The structure outlined reflects a matured student association modeled after democratic systems, including executive, legislative, and judicial arms.
